This adventure provides you with decades of Low Country History from the earliest settlements to today. Learn how Indigo, Rice, Salt, Lumber, Tobacco and Tourism developed the Low Country into an efficient economy over the decades.
Murrells Inlet begins our tour. From early times of providing a safe harbor to legendary Pirates like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, to providing a small port for the shipping of indigo, rice and more to ports in Great Brittain. The Inlets colorful history is filled with rich Legends and Ghost Lore.Your adventure provides you with a tour of the past and into the present day of Murrells Inlet, known as the Seafood Capital of South Carolina.
Then it is on to Pawley’s Island. The first European Settlement on the Island came in the early 1700’s, when land grants ran from the Rivers to the Beaches. The Plantation Owners and their families quickly developed the custom of fleeing to the beaches in late Spring and stayed until the first frost, creating one of the oldest resort destinations in the nation. The Island’s Historic District boasts housing dating from the mid 1800’s, all rich with interesting tales of love, loss, and fascinating Ghost Stories. A visit to All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church (circa 1776) is next on the agenda, built by Local Plantation Owners of Prince George Winyah Parish. The church offers both history and legends including the mystery of Alice Flagg.
Then, it is on to Pawley’s Island Hammock Shops for Lunch and a unique shopping experience. Whether sipping wine on the decks or watching the art of hammocks being made by hand, this unique setting is always a top favorite.
Brookgreen Gardens is the next stop, named one of the top 5 Gardens in the United States by Southern Living Magazine. It houses the largest collection of American sculptures in an outdoor setting in the World. In addition to decades of history dating back to the 1700’s, the Garden’s also offers a Wildlife Preserve Zoo, rich with native plants and animals to the Low Country. The Brookgreen Gardens’ Creek Excursion provides you with a boat cruise through abandoned rice fields, now home to alligators, waterfowl and osprey. As a guide provides you with the history of the actual life on the rice plantation, from it’s planting to harvesting.
